Ingredients & Substitutions
Here are the ingredients you need to make this recipe. Reference the recipe card at the bottom for exact measurements and the notes below for substitution ideas.
For the Greek Salmon
- Salmon fillets. I recommend wild Alaskan sockeye salmon fillets for high quality and the best flavor.
- Greek seasoning. Use store-bought seasoning or combine 1 teaspoon each of garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, and oregano.
- Lemon juice. Fresh lemon juice adds bright flavor and acidity.
- Olive oil. Adds a layer of healthy fat that locks in moisture and helps to season the dish.
- Salt and black pepper. Add to taste as needed.
For the Cucumber, Tomato & Feta Salad
- Extra virgin olive oil. Provides a simple Greek dressing for the cucumber salad. Swap oil for Greek yogurt or tzatziki sauce for a creamy sauce.
- Fresh dill. Fresh dill provides fresh herb flavor. Other fresh herbs like fresh parsley, fresh oregano, fresh basil, or mint work.
- Lemon juice. Fresh lemon juice adds acidity. You can also add a bit of the lemon zest.
- English cucumbers. Cucumbers diced into small pieces provide fresh flavor and crunch to the salad.
- Red onion. Onions provide crunch, texture, and flavor. You can omit onions, but they do bring a delicious flavor element.
- Feta cheese. Feta cheese is a popular cheese in many Greek salmon recipes. You can omit feta cheese for a dairy-free recipe.
- Cherry tomatoes. Tomatoes provide a slightly sweet flavor and bring freshness to the salad. I recommend grape tomatoes or cherry tomatoes.
How to Make Baked Greek Salmon
Below are step-by-step instructions for how to cook this recipe. The recipe card at the bottom shows the exact cooking time and temperatures.
Step 1: Prepare and Cook Salmon
- Dry the fish with a paper towel. Place the fillet on a sheet pan on top of parchment paper. Rub olive oil over the top of the raw fillet.
- Season the fillet with salt, pepper, and Greek seasoning.
- Oven Method. Place the baking sheet pan in a cold oven. Turn the oven on to 400F and set a timer for 20 minutes.
- Air Fryer Method. Air fry at 400F for 7 minutes or until the desired doneness.
- Grilling Method. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Place the seasoned fillets on the grill, skin side down first, and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the salmon is cooked through.
Step 2 - Make the Cucumber Feta Salad
- While the salmon bakes, add the salad ingredients to a large bowl.
Step 3 - Prepare Salmon for Serving
- Carefully remove the cooked salmon. Place it on a serving platter.
Step 4 - Serve and Enjoy!
- Use a slotted spoon to spoon the cucumber feta salad over the top of the fish and serve it.
How to Serve Greek Salmon with Feta
- Over romaine lettuce for a fresh Greek salad bowl.
- With a side of creamy mashed potatoes, rice, sweet potato wedges, quinoa, orzo, couscous, or red potatoes.
- Veggie sides like seasoned broccoli, green beans, or crispy asparagus are all great vegetable side dishes for salmon.
- Mix cooked salmon into a creamy pasta recipe like baked feta pasta.
- Pair with a spinach salad or put on top of a Mediterranean bowl or warm quinoa bowl.
Storage and Reheating Tips
- Storage. Allow salmon to cool to room temperature. Store leftover Greek salmon in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
- Oven Reheating. Reheat leftovers on a sheet pan in the oven at 350F for 3-5 minutes or until heated through.
- Air Fryer Reheating. Use the air fryer to reheat the Greek salmon at 350F for 3 minutes or until heated through.
Other Expert Tips
- Use fresh salmon. Fresh salmon should be bright pink or orange and have a neutral or mild smell.
- Add lemon slices on top of the salmon before baking for a strong citrus flavor.
- Add chopped kalamata olives for a briny and salty flavor.
- Sprinkle some red pepper flakes over the top for some spicy heat.
- Do not overcook the salmon! Check the salmon on the earlier side of the time range.
- Allow frozen salmon fillets to fully defrost them before cooking.
Recipe FAQs
The easiest way to tell if it is cooked is to use an instant-read thermometer and insert it into the thickest part of the fish.
The internal temperature when it is done is 120F for wild salmon and 125F for cooked salmon according to America's Test Kitchen.
Another indication that it is cooked is that it flakes easily with a fork.
It depends on the type of fillet you are trying to achieve. For a crispy outside edge and skin, 400F is the method to use. For a milder result, bake at 350F.
Cooked salmon can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days according to the USDA.
There is no one best way to cook it. Air frying salmon, grilling it, oven baking it and pan searing it and they all have produced great results.
In my experience, air-frying salmon seems to be the fastest method, oven-baked salmon produces the most consistent results, and grilling is the best for a smoky flavor.
