Gluten Free Apple Crisp – Easy + Healthy Recipe

This gluten free apple crisp is an easy and healthy dessert recipe that can also be a healthy breakfast idea.

Is there anything better than fresh apples in the fall?  My family is slightly apple-obsessed, in that we should probably consider starting our own orchard!  There is nothing better than traditional apple pie with a big dollop of vanilla ice cream, right?

Agreed – however, if you’re like me and trying to stay somewhat on track, you’re looking for a healthy apple crisp.  One that is easy, maybe even gluten-free or vegan-friendly!

This recipe was born out of a semi-homemade mentality.  Sandra Lee would be so very proud.  Using fresh gala apples, simple spices like pumpkin spice and cinnamon, coconut sugar and store-bought paleo granola, this recipe is quick to throw together for a healthy fall dessert or breakfast.

How to Make Easy Apple Crisp

To make a quick apple crisp you will need:

  • 5 cups of sliced apples
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp coconut flour
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp raw honey
  • 1/2 cup store-bought granola
  • You will also want to make sure you have a good vegetable peeler for peeling the apples!

Get those ingredients prepped and throwing this healthy apple crisp together will take no time at all.

What Kind of Apples for Apple Crisp Should I Use?

Truthfully any apple is a good apple to use for an apple crisp!  When apples are in season (usually July through early November) you can pick from a variety of apples for your apple crisp.

If you are looking for a tart apple – a Granny Smith apple would be a great selection for an apple crisp.  Jonagold or Honeycrisp would be a sweeter apple, while Gala apples would provide a perfect balance of tart and sweetness.  I used Gala apples for this recipe!
