🥘 Ingredients & Substitutions
Here are the ingredients you need to make this recipe. Reference the recipe card at the bottom for exact measurements and the notes below for substitution ideas.
- Dave's Killer Bread - Look for the bread that has the thick slices, not the thin sliced version. There is also the "raisin the roof" version that can be used to make cinnamon raisin french toast. Stores like Aldi carry their own brand of bread similar to Dave's that may also be substituted. To make gluten free, use gluten free bread such as Schar Gluten Free or BFree.
- Almond Milk - Oat milk or any other plant based milk works. You can also make this recipe using 2% milk if you prefer.
- Eggs: to make vegan replace eggs with three flax eggs.
- Coconut sugar: cane or brown sugar may also be used. You could also use monk fruit sweetener to make it with no sugar.
- Cinnamon: substitute pumpkin spice for cinnamon or omit if preferred.

Recipe FAQs
Yes! Make sure you are selecting the thick slice version, not the thin sliced. This will help to keep the structure.
The trick is to get the bread coated but not soaked. If the bread is too soaked then it will have a harder time getting a crispy outside. Generally 1 minute of soaking per side will work, but keep and eye on it and adjust if necessary.
Also, make sure your griddle is hot enough, but not too hot to get a crispy outside crust.

What do you do with the other half of the sugar?
Lyndsey
Apologies Lori, I missed adding that to the recipe card. I will update it now. You sprinkle it over top of the bread before cooking it.
