Why You Should Make This Recipe

    • Air fried asparagus is the perfect side dish for any meal. It's full of nutrients and flavor and browns nicely.
    • No soggy asparagus here! Air frying rather than steaming ensures delicious crispness.
    • The crisp texture will be craved by even your pickiest family members. You can even call them asparagus fries!
    • Quick to make! Get this side dish on the table in less than 10 minutes.
    • Simple ingredients make this recipe perfect no matter your dietary concern. Air fried asparagus is keto, vegan, paleo, gluten free and Whole30 compliant.

Ingredients You Need to Make This Recipe

Here are the ingredients you need to make this recipe. Reference the recipe card at the bottom for exact measurements.

    ingredients for this recipe
    • Seasonings: I love to use Everything Bagel seasoning but feel free to use your favorite seasoning blend or even just salt & pepper if you prefer. Seasoning salt, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, lemon pepper and paprika are also excellent choices.
    • Olive oil: I chose olive oil because of the delicious flavor it lends to this recipe. You can swap for butter, coconut or avocado oil if you prefer.

    How to Cook This Recipe

To prep your asparagus for air frying you will need to do the following:

    steps for making this recipe

Wash one bunch of asparagus and pat dry.  Trim the ends (the woody part) with a knife or snap off using your hands and add to a large bowl. Add in olive oil and seasonings and toss to coat.

Add to the basket in a single layer and roast at 400F for 7 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.  Serve immediately for ideal crispiness.

    Expert Tips

    • I've tested this recipe in both the Ultrean and the Ninja Foodi and both have excellent results. Any model should work, however monitor the cooking time and temperature when you first try it.
    • Select spears of equal thickness and size to ensure proper and consistent cooking. Thinner spears make take as little as 5 minutes while thicker spears may take up to 10 minutes.
    • Shake the basket halfway through cooking to ensure consistent crispiness throughout.
    • Top with mozzarella or parmesan cheese and a squeeze of lemon if desired.
    • Add some roasted garlic for additional flavor or mushrooms for another dimension of flavor and texture.
    • Reheat asparagus by air frying it at 390F for 3 minutes. Test for crispness and add additional minute if necessary.
    • Coat spears in egg and panko breadcrumbs to make breaded asparagus fries.
    • Storage tips: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

    FAQs

Can you cook asparagus too long?

Yes you can air fry it too long leaving the tips burned. Once the 7 minutes has elapsed add on one additional minute to desired crispness but keep a close watch!

Should you soak it prior to cooking?

No, you only need to trim the spears prior to cooking. No soaking is required.

Can I make air fried asparagus wrapped with bacon or prosciutto?

Yes, follow the recipe as written up through seasoning. Once seasoned wrap 4-5 spears in bacon or prosciutto (cut in half if long). Increase cook time to 9 minutes and flip halfway.

    Can I use frozen asparagus?

Frozen contains more water than it's fresh companion so expect the result to be soggier and less crispy if you decide to use frozen.
