Healthy mornings at home for me usually consist of a matcha latte and a nutritious breakfast like protein overnight oats or protein baked oatmeal. I've never been a huge coffee drinker but definitely need a little caffeine to start my day!

    Why This Recipe Works

    • Green tea lattes give you a boost of caffeine that helps you to stay alert and energized without a coffee buzz making it a perfect coffee alternative.
    • Matcha green tea has awesome health benefits like being anti-inflammatory and full of antioxidants and l-theanine according to Healthline.
    • The frothy top will have you thinking you're at your favorite coffee shop even though you're making a DIY version at home! Just like this oat milk hot chocolate!
    • If you love this recipe, be sure to try our matcha muffins!

    Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you need to make this recipe. Reference the recipe card at the bottom for exact measurements and the notes below for substitution ideas.

    ingredients for this recipe
    • Matcha Collagen: Vital Proteins Matcha Collagen is my choice when I'm making a green tea latte. It blends incredibly well with zero lumps and you get an extra boost of collagen
    • Sweetener: I use Whole Earth Sweetener which is a mix of stevia, erythritol and monk fruit extract. This makes it with no sugar, low carb and keto. You can also make it sweetened using agave, maple syrup, vanilla syrup or honey.
    • Oat Milk: I think the best cold milk for this recipe is oat milk. It makes the texture super creamy (and it's vegan if you prefer). Dairy free milk like almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk and also dairy milk works.

    How to Make This Recipe

This is a step by step walkthrough of how to cook this recipe. Exact cook time and temperatures are available in the recipe card at the bottom.

    steps for making this recipe

Combine all of the ingredients in a liquid measuring cup. Use a frother or a wire whisk to incorporate everything. Pour blended mixture over ice and add oat milk as desired.

green matcha latte powder in a green dish

You can also make an iced matcha latte with powder. The general recipe I follow for this is 1 teaspoon green tea powder mixed into 2 ounces of water, 1 packet of monk fruit sweetener, and 6 ounces of oat milk poured cold over ice in a Mason Jar.

My favorite matcha powder is the Genius brand found on Amazon.

    Expert Tips

    • If you do not have a frother you can use an immersion blender, blender or blender bottle to combine your ingredients. With no blender you can use a bamboo whisk or even a Mason Jar.
    • If you choose matcha powder be sure to select high quality ceremonial grade (the bright green kind!) for drinking rather than culinary grade. It provides the best flavor with less bitterness.
    • Serve hot by heating up the water before mixing it with the powder.

    FAQs

Can I make this with tea bags?

No, you need to use the collagen powder or matcha powder, not the tea that comes in bags.

Is matcha really good for you?

Health magazine detailed many matcha benefits. Who would have known this little green powder had so much goodness in it including:
    -filled with antioxidants
    -boosts metabolism
    -natural detoxification
    -calming
-rich in fiber, chlorophyll and other vitamins

    Does it have caffeine?

Yes the Vital Proteins has 50mg of caffeine in one serving.

    What does it taste like?

    Sweet and slightly grassy.

I have been making this frappe with about the same ingredients. I also add 2 scoops of body by vi protein powder. It’s not vanilla but sweet cream flavor. I would like to find a protein that’s a little less expensive. They all seem to come just in vanilla. Anyone know of something?
      Thank you.

I use Orgain Plant Protein - usually get it at Sam's or Costco and it's about $30 for a large tub.
