What is a Chaffle?
If you're anything like me then it was not too long ago that you were asking yourself, what is a chaffle? I had seen them a few places and being a waffle fan, I was intrigued!
If you follow me on Instagram then you know I've been trying out new varieties of these trendy little chaffles!
Chaffles are waffles consisting of just a few ingredients including eggs and cheese. From there you can make savory chaffles or sweet chaffles depending on what ingredients you add.
I also like to add some almond flour into mine to help keep them well bound. You can easily make chaffle recipes in a mini waffle maker.
These chaffles are great to prep ahead for an entire week of breakfast or snacks. I like to prep both the savory and sweet recipes to have variety!
Even if you're not following the ketogenic diet, chaffles are a completely yummy breakfast or snack. I also love savory chaffles as a bread replacement for sandwiches!

Frequently Asked Questions about a Chaffle Recipe
What do I use to make chaffles?
My favorite chaffle maker is the Dash Mini Waffle Maker. It heats up in just a few minutes and gives you perfect portions each time.
What is a chaffle made out of?
The basic recipe for a chaffle consists of eggs and cheese. From there you can add your own mix-ins to make a sweet chaffle recipe or a savory chaffle recipe.
How do I know when my chaffle is done cooking?
When I use the Dash Mini Waffle Maker I add the batter to the hot griddle. Once it stops omitting steam (around 5 or so minutes) I check the chaffles.
The Everything But the Bagel savory chaffles definitely crisp and cook up faster. The Double Chocolate Chaffles sometimes take an extra minute.
I do think that it depends on the type of cheese you are using. In the savory chaffles I use a Mexican cheese blend which crisps up nicely under heat.
For the sweet chaffle recipe, I use mozzarella cheese. Generally (such as in pizza) this cheese is more melty and less crispy.
Why do you add almond flour to the chaffles?
I like to make chaffles with almond flour to help them to bind just a bit more. Chaffles with cheese and eggs only can be slightly runny so the almond flour adds more of a waffle-like texture (more than a frittata texture).
For this chaffle recipe with almond flour I add just a little bit of almond flour to give it a nice earthy taste!
How do I eat chaffles?
There are a variety of easy recipes you can do with chaffles. Try making a chaffle sandwich with regular sandwich ingredients minus the bread!
Chaffles are also really delicious on their own. I topped the sweet chaffle with some almond butter and strawberries and it was amazing! Check out the recipe over on Instagram!
How do you reheat chaffles?
You can reheat the chaffles in the toaster oven or microwave. Of course, they are best right from the chaffle maker which gives them such delicious flavor!
Can you freeze chaffles?
Absolutely! Chaffles are great frozen and reheated. Similar to freezer waffles, they taste great after being frozen.
Chaffle Recipe for Sweet + Savory Chaffles
How to Make Chaffles
The basics for making chaffles are the same no matter what recipe you use! You will need the following things to make chaffles:
- eggs
- cheese
- almond flour
- chaffle maker
From there, you can mix together your eggs, cheese and almond flour to create a basic chaffle recipe. If you are making a savory chaffle, I recommend a sharper cheese like cheddar. For sweet chaffles I recommend mozzarella cheese.
I've included two different variations for you to make chaffles. One uses Trader Joe's Everything But the Bagel seasoning and the other uses one of my personal favorites, chocolate!
Everything But the Bagel Savory Chaffles
For the Everything But the Bagel Chaffle you will gather the ingredients from the basic chaffle recipe above and add Everything But the Bagel Seasoning from Trader Joe's.

Sorry the recipe didn't work out for you! The cooking times are definitely dependent on the waffle maker and ratio of cheese to egg.
