Ingredients and Substitutions
Here are the ingredients you need to make this recipe. Reference the recipe card at the bottom for exact measurements and the notes below for substitution ideas.
- Almond butter or peanut butter: I prefer almond butter because it tastes more neutral than peanut butter. Use a runny, natural nut butter or seed butter (creamy cashew butter would also work) to help the cake batter protein balls come together easily.
- Almond extract: Gives the recipe the classic birthday cake flavor (just like in our baked funfetti donuts!)
- Rolled oats: or substitute oat flour for a smoother protein bite. I have not used almond flour or coconut flour therefore cannot recommend them as a substitute.
- Vanilla protein powder: I use Orgain vanilla protein because it is sweetened with stevia. If using unflavored protein powder, add the sweetener of your choice (recommend honey or pure maple syrup.)
- Rainbow sprinkles: Add some sweetness and color to the recipe.
- Optional ingredients: Add ¼ cup honey for more sweetness and 1 tablespoon almond milk to assist in rolling the bites.
How to Make No-Bake Birthday Cake Protein Balls
Below are step-by-step instructions for how to cook this recipe. The recipe card at the bottom shows the exact cooking time and temperatures.
- Add all of the birthday cake energy bites ingredients to a large bowl. Use a wooden spoon or rubber spatula to mix until incorporated. You can also use a food processor to easily mix the protein balls.
- Freeze the protein bite mixture for 10 minutes. Use a small cookie scoop to scoop out approximately 21 bites.
Different Variations
- Vanilla cake batter: You can use vanilla extract if that is what you have on hand, but it will not yield the birthday cake flavor, it will be more of a vanilla cake batter.
- Add in chia seeds for more protein and crunch.
- Include collagen protein for additional grams of protein.
- Use dye-free sprinkles like Watkins Rainbow Decorating Sprinkles to make this birthday cake protein bites recipe with no artificial dyes.
- Include white chocolate chips and coconut flakes for a coconut cake flavor.
Expert Tips
- If the mixture seems too dry, drizzle a small amount of almond milk to make stirring easier.
- For the best results use a food processor to mix and freeze for 10 minutes before rolling the bites.
- Storage: Store cake batter protein balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. They may dry out if stored longer.
