Ingredients

Scale

23 pieces whole wheat bread

1/2 cup milk or unsweetened almond milk

1 pound ground beef 90/10

1 pound ground turkey

1 packet ranch seasoning

1 egg

salt + pepper to taste

1 tbsp raw honey

1 tbsp mustard

1/3 cup ketchup

Instructions

Rip bread into tiny pieces and place in a large bowl.  Add milk to soak bread and mix gently.

Add meat to the soaked bread and season with salt and pepper.  Mix gently a few times.

Add in ranch packet and one egg. Using your hands, incorporate all of the ingredients until mixed but not over mixed.

Place meat mixture onto a foil-lined pan (see helpful tips for how to make a meatloaf pan) and shape into a loaf.

Mix together ketchup, raw honey and mustard until well mixed. Coat the loaf evenly with the ketchup glaze.

Bake meatloaf in a 350F oven for 60-70 minutes or until an instant read thermometer reads 160F.

Notes

Here are a few of my top tips for making delicious classic meatloaf:

How to Make Moist Meatloaf:  Using high-fat meat will make your meatloaf juicy.  But, if you are looking to make a healthy meatloaf recipe like this one, focus on not overcooking your meat (an instant-read thermometer is crucial here!) as well as adding milk or nut milk to your meatloaf.

Instead of breadcrumbs, adding bread and milk to your meatloaf helps you to keep your meatloaf moist and delicious!

The best kind of meat for meatloaf:  I personally like the combination of ground beef and ground pork or ground beef and ground turkey for meatloaf.

All of my favorite meats come from ButcherBox  which is a grass-fed organic meat subscription box.  I’ve been using ButcherBox  for almost a year now and am beyond impressed with the meat quality, prices and customer service.

ButcherBox meat is:

  • 100% grass-fed & grass-finished.
  • Pasture-raised and free to roam.
  • Source of Omega-3’s, vitamins and minerals.

Making the best meatloaf:  If you’re wondering how to make your meatloaf better, think about some variations that may work for you and your family!  Here are a few ideas that may work for meatloaf variations:

  • try oats in meatloaf as a filler instead of bread
  • bump up the veggie factor by adding in some zucchini or other hidden veggies
  • Use a muffin tin to make healthy meatloaf muffins that are individual in size.
  • Swap out ketchup for mustard or use a low sugar ketchup like primal kitchen ketchup for a keto meatloaf

How to Make a Meatloaf Pan for Easy Cleanup:  The easiest cleanup for making meatloaf is with the America’s Test Kitchen method.

  • Line a baking sheet with foil.
  • Line a baking rack with foil and poke small holes throughout.
  • Place rack into foil lined sheet and place meatloaf on top of the rack.
