To make slow cooker pulled pork, I used my favorite crock pot.  The Instant Pot directions are also included below!  From a taste and texture perspective, the Instant Pot  pulled pork and crockpot pulled pork were pretty similar.  I preferred the slow cooker pulled pork because I felt it had just a bit more of that slow-cooked taste.

Hawaiian Pulled Pork

Summer is almost here!  This tropical pulled pork hawaiian recipe will easily become a weeknight dinner your family will love!

Ingredients

  • 1 3-4 lb pork shoulder or pork butt boneless
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 cup pineapple chopped
  • 1 tbsp arrowroot

Instructions

  1. Prepare pork by trimming much of the fat. Spray slow cooker with cooking spray and set pork into slow cooker.

  2. In a bowl mix together the soy sauce, chicken broth, pineapple juice, ketchup, coconut sugar, minced garlic, and ground ginger. Pour sauce over pork and slow cook for 8 hours on low.

  3. Once pork has cooked thoroughly and is 145F in the center as well as shreddable, move pork to a large bowl and pull.

  4. Take half of the remaining sauce and place into a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat. Combine arrowroot with 3 tbsp of water and set aside. Once sauce begins to boil, add in arrowroot mixture. Continue to boil until sauce has a barbecue sauce consistency. Add to bowl of pulled pork along with pineapple. Toss to combine.

  5. Serve on slider buns, romaine lettuce leaves or make pulled pork tacos with taco shells.

How to Make Keto Pulled Pork, Whole30 Pulled Pork, or Paleo Pulled Pork

The following items may be swapped in the recipe to make it keto, whole30 or paleo-friendly.

  • Swap soy sauce for coconut aminos
  • Replace pineapple and juice for guava and guava juice (Keto pulled pork only, pineapple is suitable for keto or paleo diets)
  • Sub coconut sugar for stevia or Swerve (reduce measurement to 1/8 cup or less due to sweetness)
  • Replace standard ketchup with a Whole30 or Keto approved ketchup

How to Make Pulled Pork in the Oven

If you don’t have an instant pot or slow cooker you can also make pulled pork in the oven.  Follow all instructions and place pork and sauce into an oven-safe cooking dish.  Roast at 300F for 6 hours or until pork has cooked thoroughly, is shreddable and is 145F in the center.

How to Freeze Pulled Pork

This pulled pork recipe is great for preparing healthy freezer meals all year round.  Once the pork has completed cooking and is cool enough to transfer, you can begin to prepare it to be frozen.  I like to use freezer bags like these that help me to identify what the dish is as well as when it was made.  They also stand up so it’s easier to fill them!  Cooked pork shoulder can remain in the freezer for 6 to 8 months.

How to Store Pulled Pork

Pulled pork can be stored in the refrigerator for three to four days.  Be sure to store it in an air-tight container.  Pork can be re-heated in the microwave or on the stovetop.

This pulled pork recipe is also great for Father’s Day!  I know my husband does not want me to have to spend all day in the kitchen preparing a meal for Father’s Day.  We would much rather be out doing something active and celebrating him!  You can cook the pulled pork in the slow cooker and enjoy time with the dads in your life!
