How to Start a Blog

Step 1:  Set up your Blog, website, and hosting

What is Affiliate Marketing?

If you’re sitting here today scratching your head about how to make money with your blog, I assure you that you are not alone!  I wrote my blog for over 2 years before I decided to start monetizing it.  There are a few ways to do that (more blog posts to come on that!) but this article is going to focus on one of the easiest and fastest ways to start making money with your blog.  That is affiliate marketing!

Affiliate marketing are programs where you as a blogger or influencer partner with brands to recommend their product or services.  You get paid a commission based on the company’s compensation structure.  It could be based per click or per sale and varies depending on each company.

Starting in Affiliate Marketing

Becoming an Amazon affiliate is one of the quickest ways to get started in affiliate marketing.  Everyone loves Amazon right?  Anytime you recommend a product through your Amazon affiliate link, Amazon pays you for each purchase made in that Amazon visit.  So it doesn’t have to just be the item you are recommending!  If someone adds other items to their cart, you get a commission on that too.

You can sign up to be an Amazon affiliate by visiting this link.

What Programs to Choose

I highly recommend that you only engage in affiliate relationships that are products that you personally use or have used.  They should be products that you love and would share even if you weren’t receiving a commission.

Here are the affiliate programs I am a part of:

Ultimate Bundles – Ultimate Bundles are bundles of e-books, courses, and resources you can purchase together at a hugely discounted price.  The topics range from healthy eating, parenting, DIY, blogging, essential oils, the list goes on!
Amazon – Who doesn’t love prime???
Stitch Fix – a clothing subscription service that sends you specially curated pieces based on your style and budget
Convertkit – my email marketing provider that helps me to organize my mailing list, create landing pages, and stay connected to my readers via email.
Bluehost – I host my website with Bluehost.
ShareaSale – Shareasale is a platform that houses a number of affiliate programs to become involved with.  I’m an affiliate with Flirty Aprons, Gymboree, Mixbook and Faithbox through Shareasale.  You can choose a variety of options. However, I suggest only having an affiliate relationship with companies and brands that you would personally use yourself.

Your goal at this point in your blog should not be to expect income.  When you start focusing too much on the numbers, it becomes easy to lose sight of why you started your blog in the first place.  I recommend thinking about your niche customer and how they can benefit from the affiliate programs you are a part of.  You can make good money with affiliate marketing, but you want to stay true to who you are trying to serve!

This is so useful! I’m pretty clueless in terms of affiliates/monetising my blog, I didn’t know Amazon had their own scheme – it’s so good that you get commission on any item they add via your link as well. Thank you for your knowledge! x

      December 14, 2017 at 6:23 pm

yes!! Amazon is the easiest one! and I’ve been recommending Ultimate Bundles for the high paying commission!! Why not start right?

I’m also an Amazon and Shareasale affiliate 🙂 Another good middleman affiliate is Commission Junction! They have affiliates like Michaels, Home Depot and Pier1 Imports!

    December 14, 2017 at 9:44 pm

Affiliate marketing can be a tricky thing, which I’m still trying to master. Amazon is great, but they don’t seem to pay well – it’s still great to see daily sales coming in though based on my recommendations!

      December 15, 2017 at 7:17 am

agreed!! its very cyclical with Amazon but definitely think its worth it for products I use!

  • Chelsea

    December 14, 2017 at 10:29 pm

This was so helpful! I earn a little through RewardStyle but it’s not much :/

      December 15, 2017 at 7:16 am

I am a RewardStyle affiliate too and agree. But I do think it takes time and a focus on fashion to be able to make good $ with it! I have a friend that does it really well! Have you tried ShopStyle? They pay per click and also for purchases 🙂

    December 14, 2017 at 10:41 pm

This is so helpful! I definitely want to make at least a small profit through my blog but it always seems terrifying. Thanks for the recommendations!

      December 15, 2017 at 7:16 am

You definitely can! Even if you don’t blog about blogging you can create a “How I created my blog” post and mark your affiliates! For example Bluehost is my hosting and I’ve had a great experience so I am an affiliate!

  • Mala |

    December 15, 2017 at 12:25 am

I have recently started affiliate marketing. Do you have tips for such promotions?

To the list of products, I would add becoming an affiliate for courses one takes.

      December 15, 2017 at 7:15 am

that’s a great idea Mala!! I will definitely be adding a post about promoting affiliates!

What a great blog post. When I first started blogging, it was like learning a whole new language! I agree that you shouldn’t lose sight of why you started your blog in the first place. Affiliated income should just be a unexpected bonus.

      December 19, 2017 at 1:54 pm

I loved this post. I am VERY new to blogging and affiliate marketing. The only one I’m part of is Amazon, since it was easy to set up and you can find products on Amazon to match almost any niche. I also totally agree about staying true to who you are and who your blog is for. It would be weird to market something that has very little to do with your topic. Also, for now I want to write good, quality content, and not totally focus on selling things. I think it is possible to find a great balance over time. I am saving your post! Thank you.

      December 19, 2017 at 1:52 pm

exactly!!! recommending things that you use or could be of use to your readers is definitely helpful. Glad this helps and thanks for checking it out!

Great ideas for new bloggers! I remember finding it really challenging to know where to even start…this is very helpful!

      December 19, 2017 at 1:50 pm

I agree!! there is a ton of information out there and I tend to get analysis paralysis!

I wish I read this when I first started blogging! Great advice!

haha I am hoping it helps some newbies get started easier!

  • Lauren

    December 15, 2017 at 11:38 pm

This is a great list of affiliates. It’s so useful to hear what’s working well for others. I know I need to focus on how to incorporate it better into my content.

      December 19, 2017 at 1:50 pm

I think its partially trial and error and finding what works for your niche! Even starting with a “how to start a blog” post and adding in your blog tool affiliates should be a good starting place!
