Monthly Bible Verse for Kids

This year I joined a MOPS group at a church that is 5 minutes from my house.  I have no idea why I waited to join such an amazing group.  We meet twice a month and its a really good time to fill MY cup without having the guilt I know many women feel when doing things for themselves.  Honestly we have to do things for ourselves.  Mothering is such a giving role, and this is a great way to be filled up and I really feel so much better each time I go!

This week, the family pastor spoke to us about planting seeds that we want to sow.  The pastor challenged us to think about our home now versus the home that we envisioned as children that we would live in as adults.  Pastor Jamie talked about the importance of creating a home that children feel is fun, comfortable, and a place where tension is minimized.  He emphasized the time and place for structure, but also acknowledged that without a certain level of fun in the home, children can grow to value and honor busyness rather than the important things like a close family bond, held together with trust and communication.

He challenged us to:

-Allow our children to see us apologizing to each other to demonstrate forgiveness

-Allow our children to view affection (hugs and kisses i.e.) as a visual example of what a husband/wife relationship is like, and basically not to be embarrassed to let your kids see you kiss!

-Eliminate sarcasm and undercutting in our marriages and to focus on how we can encourage and lift up our spouse

-Take time to enjoy the silliness and fun of having children

He suggested a book titled, “In This House We Will Giggle” which has a monthly bible verse and a monthly fun activity and theme to go along with the verse.  I (of course) ordered the book so that I could do the activities with my girls but in case you want to get started with a monthly bible verse and theme, here is the list that he provided to us!

A few of my favorite books!

Monthly Bible Verse for Kids

January:  Joy ~ Proverbs 15:13
February:  Love ~ 1 John 4:19
March:  Forgiveness ~ Ephesians 4:32
April:  Faith ~ Galatians 2:20
May:  Patience ~ Romans 8:25
June:  Perseverance ~ Philippians 4:13
July:  Respect ~ Romans 12:10
August:  Responsibility ~ Colossians 3:23
September:  Service ~ Ephesians 6:7
October:  Humility ~ Philippians 2:3-4
November:  Gratitude ~ Colossians 3:17
December:  Generosity ~ 1 Timothy 6:18

The one thing that REALLY stuck with me that he mentioned was how important our jobs as mothers are.  And how work will always be there, but it is our mission from God to parent our children.  That is our number one and most important job.  I can definitely be guilty of focusing on “work” when I should really take the time to be silly and have fun!  Priorities shift happening over here!

I have “In This House We Will Giggle” on my bookshelf. It’s one of the many books I want to read. Thanks for the reminder to get on it!

This is such good advice. I know I get caught up in the structure side far too often. I’ve been struggling to know what to do about my 3 year old’s bad attitude lately. I think you just answered my prayers. <3

I think we all do! Its hard to find the line of instilling structure, which kids need!, while also making sure to keep it fun!
