These are all basic yoga poses.  You should always consult your doctor before starting any health & fitness routine.  I have found doing these few simple poses for 5 minutes can take my stress level seriously down!

Postpartum Fitness Journey | My 18 month transformation

First there was 6 weeks postpartum, then 12 months, now there is 24 months postpartum and 18 months since I truly started on my fitness journey.

Let me tell you one thing, it hasn’t been easy.  But it completely 100% has been worth it.

What I’ve overcome:

-hiding behind baggy clothes – I used to hide behind my clothes.  In fact, getting dressed in the morning was one of my most dreaded chores.  Mostly because I was completely uncomfortable in my own skin.  I was constantly hiking up my pants and pulling my shirt out to cover up my belly.

-having no energy – I woke up at 6 or 6:30am like I had been run over by a truck.  I could barely make it to naptime without wanting to take a nap myself.  I don’t drink coffee so I would drink tons of tea to get a caffeine boost.

-making excuses – I had every excuse in the book why I couldn’t change my lifestyle.  I didn’t have the time, the space, the money.  Truth was I did have the time, I just didn’t value my fitness and nutrition enough to make the time.  I did have the space, I have a basement that I can work out in.  Its not the prettiest area in the world but it works.  I found the money.  Initially I planned on selling my copy of Insanity to pay for my copy of 21 Day Fix but instead I cancelled my gym membership that I used maybe 3 times a month.  I found the way to pay for it.  Because I wanted to.  When there is a will, there is a way.

-being my own worst enemy – see above.  I had every excuse in the book as to why it couldn’t work for me.  I was so far from what I perceived to be the end result, that even getting started didn’t seem worth trying.  I started to think that maybe I should just settle with how I felt.

What I still struggle with:

-my postpartum shape (some things just never go back!) – I still have extra skin, my hips are wider, you can definitely tell I’ve had two kids.  Its just something we all have to deal with, even when we don’t want to.

-snacking and kid food at times – sometimes its hard!  I realized while I was doing Whole30 that I used snacking and taking bites of kid food as a control thing.  Its crazy how mindful I became of what I was eating and realizing that I was snacking because I wanted to be able to, not because I was hungry.

-the fact that my weight is higher than I’d like it to be – muscle weighs more than fat, its a fact.  But we are conditioned to look at the scale.  I preach this all the time, inches and how you feel are worth more than the number on the scale.  But old habits die hard and its still something I’m working on.

Who I am today:

-stronger than I’ve ever been – I’m the girl who walked into yoga class 6 weeks postpartum and couldn’t hold a plank.  I can now hold planks til the cows come home, can easily lift weights, do 20 pushups and make it through an entire 30 minutes of Insanity Max 30 (HUGE accomplishment for any Shaun T fans out there!)

-have better nutrition than I ever have – I never knew what an impact veggies and protein would have on my fitness journey.  I was kidding myself that diet food, points, low-carb, low calorie or anything like that would work.  I found a system that worked for me in the Portion Fix and Shakeology and my diet now consists of mainly veggies and proteins, some grains, healthy fats, and fruit.  I do enjoy a cheat meal every now and then, but I have no guilt about it.

-have more energy than I could have ever expected to – for the last 18 months I’ve been getting up at 5:00am to start my day.  The added energy I get from leading a healthy lifestyle has enabled me to wake up earlier and CREATE time in my day.  Yes, I have more time than some people.  Because I choose to get up instead of sleep.  I get a whole hour and a half more of my day than I did 18 months ago.  That is why I’m able to fit in my workout, read personal development books, do a morning devotional, and operate my coaching business.  I realized that I HAD to make the time if I was going to make real change in my life.

-have a vision – the vision for my future and my family’s future is something I never would have imagined before.  I thought I’d live my life tired, unhappy with my body, and without much direction about where the next steps were headed.  Thanks to a seemingly innocuous decision 18 months ago to order a little workout program I’d seen on an informercial, my life has forever changed.

What you should know

Change is possible.  Its possible for all of us.  Push beyond your limiting beliefs and know that you have the power inside to change your circumstance.  Whatever it is.  You have to believe and align yourself with people who will support you!  Whether its fitness, or purpose, I’m always looking to connect with people who need the push to take the next step!  Feel free to contact me at mommafitpgh@gmail.com and I’d love to help you get started!

3 Week Yoga Retreat Review

Oh hey blog, nice to see ya.  Its been awhile….

Yoga retreat recap, week 1!  I definitely entered this program with a little hesitation and a lot of resistance (pun intended yogi friends 🙂 )Mostly because I have done yoga for the past 8 years AND have completed some pretty killer programs (hello ego!)  So did I think the 3 week yoga retreat would be easy peasy for me?  Pretty much yes.

So as luck would have it, I pulled a back muscle weight lifting.  Lesson learned – more stretching before lifting heavy things!!  Not enough stretching and too much rushing led to a back  muscle that was begging me to put on the brakes.  Also, with Core de Force launching in November, I knew I wanted to be at 100% to be ready for it.  Enter 3 week yoga retreat.  On top of all of this, I hate to admit it but my 80/20 clean eating lifestyle was starting to slip.  Too many treats, too many tastes of kid food.  I still felt fit but knew my nutrition needed a kick in the pants.  Luckily, the retreat’s meal plan is heavy on the plants.  So October, you are all about relaxation, de-stressing, plant-eating, and muscle healing.

So week 1.  Pure shock.  Not only did I get schooled by Vytas on correct posing, but the first week is all about foundation.  Meaning you hold poses.  For awhile.  Not easy for muscles full of stress and resistance. But oh so good for me!

Each day of the 3 week yoga retreat provides a different focus.

Week 1 was all about the foundation.  Setting up the proper poses, doing things the right way so that you are getting the most out of the pose, feeling like you are doing it right, and preventing injury!

Monday – Core
Tuesday – Stretch
Wednesday – Balance
Thursday – Flow
Friday – Flow on the go
Saturday – Relax
Sunday – Take 10

Now, on to the meal plan.  Like I said its heavy on the plants 🙂  which is a good thing right?  But when I saw a lot of veggies, rice, and not a ton of meat (mostly shrimp, fish and chicken) I was really afraid the food would be boring and I’d be starving.  I was shocked at how good the recipes were.  Even my hubby liked them.  I was a little hungry at the beginning of the week, but I do think that was a result of my body adjusting from vacation eating (eek!) to smaller portions.

Coming back from vacation was a little challenging but I knew I needed to reign in my nutrition.  And friends, nutrition is the battle.  Its all of the battle.  Following the meal plan, drinking daily Shakeology, and finding the time to de-stress!  I was blown away by my results in 4 days… 4.4 pounds and 1 inch in my stomach!

Verdict:  I was totally wrong in my initial reaction to this program.  I thought I’d have zero results (obviously wrong) and I’d be bored with the program.  I actually look forward to this time every day and the de-stressing has greatly helped me sleep and get myself all stretched out!

Healthy Chipotle Copycat Recipes | Paleo Swap

Who doesn’t love a Chipotle copycat?  I actually hit up Chipotle earlier in the week and didn’t eat all of the Pico de gallo so amazingly enough this recipe had real actual Chipotle Pico de Gallo in it!  Can I get a woot woot?

My July Summer Bootcamp challenge group starts next week and we are offering (for the first time only) a PALEO meal plan!  My Whole30 experience has me all generous feeling to spread the Paleo love.  But this recipe is so yummy, you really don’t need any grain.

The Directions

First of all this might be the EASIEST recipe, especially for a weeknight!  I’m a huge fan of the grill this summer so in the morning I grabbed two chicken breasts and rubbed them with some 21 Day Fix Smoky Southwest seasoning!  I let them sit in the fridge all day and then thrown them on the grill over medium heat for about 7-10 minutes (or until your meat thermometer says they’re done!)  I let the chicken rest while I prepped the other ingredients!  Grab yourself some Trader Joe’s riced cauliflower.  Frozen or fresh, doesn’t matter.  Chop up some peppers and sprinkle in a little 21 Day Fix all purpose seasoning.  Throw in a little chopped cilantro and the riced cauliflower and let them simmer away in skillet sprayed with cooking spray.  While those are cooking up, slice up some fresh avocado.  Assemble.  Did I say this was the easiest recipe ever?  And oh so yummy.  Enjoy!
