home organization ideas for decluttering

Need some home organization DIY ideas?  It’s time to declutter my friends!  If you read my previous post, you know that intentional living is where it’s at in 2018!  Step 1 to living intentionally?  Getting rid of all of the junk we don’t need.  It won’t happen in a day, but it can happen over the month, and over the year!  By the end of 2018, let’s all vow to have less junk and more space!

The messy, messy before

I’m embarrassed to say that this was not even the worst this has been.  It actually is relatively organized chaos here.  But the overrun of papers, general junk, and too many things without a home have to go.

Oh wait, I didn’t actually open up the junk drawers yet.  EEEK!  This jumbled mess is enough to make anyone cringe right?  Listen friends I’m right there with you!  Junk in our house seems to multiply on the daily!  home organization DIY ideas Step 1:  Take everything out of the drawers.  Wipe down the drawers and start fresh.

Step 2:  Assess the pile.  Sort things by category.  One really awesome idea I got from Emily Ley’s Simplified Life book was to group things together where they belong.  For example, see those 4 screwdrivers?  Yep, those made their home BACK in the garage where they belong.  We ended up throwing away the majority of this stuff and kept the basics.

Step 3:  Keep only the necessities!  We kept a packet of office supplies, my favorite label maker, a nail clipper (always trimming someone’s nails!), games and charger for the Leappad, and my trusty “Turn on Dryer” note 🙂home organization DIY ideas

Note:  I spent NO money to clean this out.  Fancy organizers rarely get used in my home.  I used a few of the strategies I read about in Emily’s book and just got rid of the junk!

Here are a few of my favorite organizational tools that helped with this project!  (affiliate links)

No need for dishes and dividers if you don’t have much stuff, you got rid of a ton junk! I have a catch all drawer now too, for the most part I throw stuff away as soon as I am done using it and that helps keep my clutter down.

I am in the process of decluttering and it is a work in progress. I usually work one room or closet at a time, that works best for me.

Your junk drawer looks a lot like mine. I’m embarrassed to say I fear opening it because I can’t always close it. I think you have inspired me to tackle one drawer at a time. You’re right, you don’t necessarily need fancy things to organize it, just putting everything in its proper place, and eliminating the garbage.

Decluttering and organizing at the beginning of the year, helps me to have something to look forward to. I like how the drawer looks so much bigger and spacious once you were done.
